Week of May 21-25, 2017

Reading:  Our new story is called “Alistar and Kip’s Great Adventure.” This is an animal fantasy about a dog and a cat. They build a boat and sail to the sea.  We will use the plot of this story to discuss how friends can work together to build things. Our amazing words are: gathered, drifting, island, distant, voyage, and aboard. The sight words we will focus on are: for, my, of, we, and yellow.

Math: Our kindergarten math lessons are complete! We are beginning our “Step Up to First Grade” Lessons. These topics introduce skills the children will see next year.

 Important News:
~ Kindergarten Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd in the High School Auditorium at 1:00pm.  Doors will open at 12:45. Please keep in mind that hairstyles should accommodate a graduation cap. The children will be walking up and down steps to the stage, along with standing on risers. Please plan shoe styles accordingly.

~ Friday, May 25th is Carnival Day. Please make sure your child is wearing socks and sneakers along with shorts for this fun-filled day of activities.  Don’t forget the sunscreen!

~ School is closed on Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day.

~ Dibels tests took place last week. Thank you for all of your review and practice at home. The children did an amazing job! I am so proud of their progress.

Week of May 14-18, 2018
"Kick Butts" day activities were held inside due to the weather. Students from the high school discussed the negative effects of tobacco. 

Reading: This week’s story is called “Building Beavers.” It is an informational text discussing how beavers build their homes. We will be practicing how to find the main idea in stories. We also are continuing to write telling sentences correctly. (Capital letter at the beginning, finger space between words, period at the end.) The amazing words for the week are: beaver, lodge, paddle, river, stream, and lake. The sight words to review are: the, was, to, like, and from.

Phonics: Ee is our focus letter. Initial and medial /e/ will be reviewed. We will also work on long vowel sounds.

Math: Topic 12 will be tested this week. Measurement is the focus. We are comparing objects by length, height, capacity, and weight.


Reminders:
~ Dibels tests will take place on Wednesday, May 16th.   Please continue to practice letter naming, phoneme segmentation and nonsense words. Speed is important!

 ~ There will be a Spartan dress down day on Friday.  Students may pay $1.00 to wear jeans or sweatpants with a Spartan shirt.
~ Tuesday, May 22nd is Kindergarten Graduation. It will take place at 1:00 pm in the high school auditorium. Information and tickets will be sent home during the week.

~ Don’t forget to keep practicing those sight words!

Week of May 7-11, 2018
Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

Reading:  “Old MacDonald had a Workshop” is the story for this week. This animal fantasy answers the question, “What tools do you need to build things?” We will be reviewing characters and introducing prepositional phrases. The amazing words are: saw, hammer, file, drill, screwdriver, and chisel. We will concentrate on the following sight words: where, that, is, come, and go.


Phonics: Short and long vowel sounds are revisited, with the focus on Oo. The letter is reviewed in the beginning, middle, and even the end of words.

Math: We are working on Topic 12 this week. Measurement is the focus. We will compare objects by length, height, capacity, and weight.

Reminders:
~ The Book Fair is this week. Parent night is Monday, May 7, 2018. Our class will be shopping on Thursday, May 10th.
~ Friday, May 11th will be a dress down day. Students may pay $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt. For an additional $1.00 they may wear their favorite hat.
~ Please continue to practice sight words daily. We are very proud of the progress everyone is making!
~Kindergarten Graduation is Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 1:00pm in the high school auditorium.
