Week of April 24-28, 2016


Reading: Our story for the week is called "On the Move!”. This informational text discusses how people in different parts of the world travel. The comprehension skill we will practice is Main Idea. We will also learn more about nouns in sentences. The amazing words from the story are: travel, llama, submarine, kayak, dogsled, and double-decker bus. The targeted sight words are: when and come.
Phonics: Two letters will be targeted this week. We will work with the letters Vv (with the /v/ sound as in van) and Zz (with the /z/ sound as in zebra).

Math:  We are beginning Topic 10. These lessons will continue composing numbers from 11-19.

Reminders:
~ Please continue to practice all sight words daily. Congratulations to the students who are able to read all 96 words!
~Practice writing words and sentences. Sentences should start with a capital letter, contain a space between words, and have an ending mark.
~ DIBELS testing will begin soon. Continue to review letter naming, segmenting, and nonsense words for these 1 minute assessments.

~Friday, April 28th is a Spartan Dress Down Day.  Students may donate $1.00 to wear jeans or sweatpants with a Spartan shirt.

~Our monthly reward for good behavior will take place on Friday, April 28th. Students who have 2 or more yellow or red days in their calendar will not participate.

~ Take a look in the Republican Herald newspaper on Thursday, April 27th.  “A Child’s View” will be published.  You will find your child’s response to what they want to be when they grow up.

~Kindergarten Graduation will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, May 23rd in the NS High School Auditorium.  Each student will receive 5 tickets for the event.

Week of April 17-20, 2017



Reading:  The story for the week is “The Little Engine That Could.” This classic fantasy is used to teach about the work done by trains. Students will identify plot in stories to build their comprehension skills. We will revisit the concept of nouns and learn about writing formal letters. The amazing words this week are: engine, passenger, mountain, tracks, roundhouse, and valley. The sight words featured include: what, said, and was.

Phonics:  We will continue working on Uu with the initial and medial /u/ sound, as in umbrella and tub. Vv will also be introduced this week.



MathTopic 9 (Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10) will be tested this week. Please practice the plus and minus sign with your child. Also practice writing number sentences for addition and subtraction. After this test, we will continue composing the numbers 11-19 in Topic 10.



Reminders:

~ United States projects will be presented this week.

~ Remember to practice ALL sight words EVERY night. Time is winding down to learn the 17 lists of 96 words!

~ Please continue to practice writing words and sentences. Also review DIBELS skills. Repetition leads to success!

~The NSE Art Show will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, April 19th from 4:00-6:00pm.

~Kindergarten Graduation pictures will take place on Thursday, April 20th. All children will be photographed. There will be no make-up pictures. Students need to wear a white collared shirt. Please keep hairstyles simple enough to be worn with a cap. If purchasing a picture package, please send payment in the picture envelope by Wednesday.

~Students who earn this month’s positive behavior reward will participate in an Egg Hunt on April 28th. Please encourage good behavior!

Week of April 10-14, 2017



Reading: This week’s story is called “Trucks Roll!” This rhyming, nonfiction book discusses what types of transportation help people do their jobs. We will practice how to compare and contrast to build comprehension skills. Prepositions will be introduced and poems will be practiced. The amazing words in the story are: trailers, cabs, haul, steering wheel, truckers, and headlight. The sight words to focus on are: what, said, and was.

Phonics: This week’s feature letter is Uu.  The short /u/ sound, as in umbrella, will be taught in the initial and medial position of words.



Math: Topic 10 (Composing Numbers 11 to 19) is a hard concept for the children. Therefore, we will continue with extra practice on these concepts for the week. Please help your child remember the equal, plus, and minus signs.



Reminders:

~There will be no school on Friday, April 14th.

~ Kindergarten Graduation Pictures will be taken on April 20th. If you wish to purchase a package, please send in the envelope along with your payment as soon as possible. Keep in mind that all students will be photographed for the class photo. Therefore, children must wear white collared shirts that day.

~ Thank you for your donations to our PTO Road Trip Basket. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

~Please continue to practice sight words and word writing daily. I am seeing great improvements!

Week of April 3-7, 2017



Reading: We will be reading an informational text that discusses what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency. The story is called “Mayday1 Mayday!” Cause and Effect is the comprehension skill we will continue to develop. The amazing words are: rescue, yacht, mechanic, pilot, sailor, and shimmering. The popular sight words are: yellow, blue, and green. Writing practice will focus on using question marks and uppercase letters appropriately. Sentences that rhyme are also used throughout the week.

Phonics:  The letter of the week is Xx. The final /ks/ sound will be stressed, as in the word box.



Math: Composing and decomposing numbers to 10 is continued this week. Making whole groups using different parts is the idea we are working on. We are writing number sentences to show these different parts. (ex. 4+4=8, 3+5=8, 2+6=8)  We will also learn how to use a graph to solve a problem.



Reminders:

~ The PTO Basket Auction donations are due by Tuesday, April 4th. Each child is encouraged to donate a “Road Trip” item or a monetary donation in order to purchase these items.  Thank you to all who have made their donations! Remember to visit the auction on April 8th or 9th to try your luck.

~ All Spring Pictures or money for the packages should be returned ASAP.

~ Please remember to practice sight words daily. The goal is to learn 17 lists containing 96 words! Many children are getting very close to this goal. Thank you for your help!
