Week of February 26- March 2, 2018

Reading: We will read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” this week. This classic fairy tale will be used to understand characters in a story. We are also practicing how to write telling sentences. Our amazing words for the week are: bears, cottage, middle-sized, porridge, big, and small. The sight words  include: one, two, three, four, and five.

Phonics: Gg is the letter of the week. The /g/ sound, as in goose will be the focus. We will practice words with this sound at the beginning, as well as words containing this sound at the end (ex. bag).

Math:  Topic 7 (Understanding Addition) will be continued this week. We will use number stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences. Please review the vocabulary words add, plus sign, equal sign, and sum while you are practicing addition at home.


Reminders:

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are a lot! Congratulations to those students who are practicing the first grade list already!

~ Scholastic book orders are due on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
~ On Friday, March 2nd, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

Week of February 19-23, 2018


A week full of celebrations!



Reading:  “One Little Mouse” is our story for the week. This is an animal fantasy that answers the question “What adventures can animals have?” Story sequence will be stressed in these lessons. The amazing words presented are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, and shadows. The targeted sight words are: one, two, three, four, and five. We will also learn what parts are needed in a sentence to make it complete.

Phonics:  Consonant blends will be introduced this week. The students will learn how to blend two sounds together in a word. (ex. /s/ and /l/ together make a /sl/ sound, as in slide.

Math: Topic 6 (Numbers on a hundred chart) will be tested this week. The skills included are counting and writing numbers, counting groups of 10, counting by 2’s, looking for patterns on a hundred chart, and estimating about how many.  Topic 7 will also be introduced. The goal of this topic is to understand addition. We will use stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.

 Reminders:

~ Please review sight words daily. Also practice counting by 1’s, 2’s, and 10’s. Students are expected to count to 100!

~Don’t forget to log the books you are reading. 15 is the goal for each month.


~ Friday, February 23rd is Movie Night in the high school auditorium. It begins at 7:00pm for anyone who would like to attend.

Week of February 12-16, 2018
Celebrating a moment of historic sports history!


Reading: We will begin “My Lucky Day” this week. This animal fantasy tells about a fortunate adventure involving a piglet and a fox. We will be exploring cause and effect, as well as action parts in a sentence. The Amazing Words for the week are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy and scrubber. The Sight Words: are, that and so will be rehearsed.

Phonics: The focus letter is Ll. The sound for this letter is /l/, as in lemon. We will explore this sound in the beginning and end of words.


Math: Topic 6 will explore Numbers to 100.  We are counting and writing numbers, counting groups of 10, looking for patterns on a hundred chart, and estimating about how many. Please also practice these skills at home.


Reminders:
~ Remember to have your child wear a winter coat to school daily. Sweatshirts are too cold for outside recess.
~ Please practice sight words daily. Also go over class work that is sent home. This helps to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the day.

 ~Friday is a Spartan Dress Down Day. A donation of $1.00 will allow students to wear jeans or sweatpants with a Spartan shirt.

Week of February 5-9, 2018
We had a "super" 100th Day of School!

Reading: “My Lucky Day” is our new story. This animal fantasy tells about a fortunate adventure involving a piglet and a fox. Math:  Topic 5 (Numbers to 20) will be tested this week.  In this unit we count, read, and write numbers 11-20. (Please continue practicing writing the numbers 0-20 at home, along with counting to 100.) Topic 6 will also begin this week. This unit teaches numbers to 100. It will start by counting to 30, and estimating items. Our estimations will determine if objects are closer to 10 or 20.



Reminders:

~ Remember to have your child wear a winter coat to school daily. We go outside for recess as often as possible. It is too cold to wear only sweatshirts. 

~ Please practice sight words daily. Also go over class work that is sent home. This helps to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the day.

~Friday, 2/9/17 is our Valentine party from 2:00-3:00.  Please have cards sent in on time.
