Week of February 27- March 3, 2017



Reading: We will complete “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” this week.  The next story is an informational text called “If You Could Go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill in this story is classifying and categorizing. The amazing words for the week are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words stressed this week are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss how to write sentences correctly. Capital letters and periods will be stressed further this week.

Phonics: Ee is the letter accompanying these lessons. We will discuss both the long and short sound for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.



Math: Topic 7’s “Understanding Addition” will finish up this week. This topic teaches joining groups, using the plus sign, finding sums, and writing addition sentences. Topic 8 “Understanding Subtraction” will also begin.  The lessons include separating groups, taking away, using the minus sign, finding differences, and writing subtraction sentences.



Reminders:

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are a lot!

~ On Friday, March 3rd, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

~ The PTO is holding a Chinese Auction on April 8th and 9th. Check your child’s folder for a letter regarding our basket theme.

Week of February 13-17, 2017

The weather has been causing some changes in our plans. However, we were still able to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday. The students enjoyed the fun time with their friends and the special messages they received from each other. Thank you for the sweet Valentines!



Reading:  We will complete “My Lucky Day” this week. Cause and effect is still the focus skill.  The next story we will start is “One Little Mouse.” This is an animal fantasy that answers the question “What adventures can animals have?” Story sequence will be stressed in these lessons. The amazing words presented are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, and shadows. The targeted sight words are: one, two, three, four, and five. We will also learn what parts are needed in a sentence to make it complete.

Phonics:  Consonant blends will be introduced this week. The students will learn how to blend two sounds together in a word. (ex. /s/ and /l/ together make a /sl/ sound, as in slide.



Math:  Topic 7 (Understanding Addition) will be introduced. We will use stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.



Reminders:

~Thursday is a dress down day. Students may donate $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt along with jeans or sweatpants.

~Friday (2/17/17) is an Act 80 Day for teachers. Students do not have school.

~Monday (2/20/17) is President’s Day. School will be closed.

~ Please continue to practice sight words daily. We are striving to attain and possibly surpass that goal of 96 words!

~Continue practicing counting to 100 and writing numbers 0-20.

Week of February 6-10, 2017



Reading: “My Lucky Day” is our new story. This animal fantasy tells about a fortunate adventure involving a piglet and a fox. We will be exploring cause and effect, as well as action parts in a sentence. The Amazing Words for the week are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy and scrubber. The Sight Words: are, that and so will be rehearsed.

Phonics: The focus letter is Ll. The sound for this letter is /l/, as in lemon. We will explore this sound in the beginning and end of words.



Math: Topic 6 (Numbers on a hundred chart) will be tested this week.  Topic 7 will also be introduced. The goal of this topic is to understand addition. We will use stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.



Reminders:

~ Please review sight words daily. Also practice counting by 1’s, 2’s, and 10’s. Students are expected to count to 100!

~Don’t forget to log the books you are reading. 15 is the goal for each month.

~Wednesday, 2/8/17 will be a data delay.

~Friday 2/10/17 is our Valentine party. Please have cards sent in on time.

~Group activity photos will be taken on 2/10/17. Please return your form if you have not done so.
