Week of January 29-February 2, 2018

Reading: We will start Unit 4 this week. The stories in this section will discuss adventures. The first story is Eric Carle’s animal fantasy, “Rooster’s Off to See the World.” Sequence (the order of events in a story) will be the skill taught.  The new amazing words to explore are: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, and homesick. The sight words to focus on are: are, do, and that.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is Hh. The initial /h/ sound (as in helicopter) will be the focus.

Math: We will continue to work on Topic 5, "Numbers to 20." In this unit we count, read, and write numbers 11-20. The next Topic works on Numbers to 100.  (Please keep practicing writing the numbers 0-20 at home, along with counting to 100. We have many students who met both goals already!)

Class News:

~Our 100th day is only a few days away! On Thursday, February 1st we will be completing activities involving the concept of 100. Students are encouraged to dress as if they were 100 years old. (If there is a snow day, the 100th day will be pushed back to Friday.)
~Friday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day.  Remember to check Phil’s weather predictions!

~ We will also make Superbowl predictions on Friday in class. FLY EAGLES FLY!
~Our Valentine Party will be held on Friday, February 9th from 2:00-3:00pm. This is when valentine cards will be passed out. Please be sure to have your child bring their cards to school by that on time.

Please support our Fun Run!

Week of January 22-26, 2018

Reading: This week’s story is the classic fable, “The Lion and the Mouse.” The skill we are focusing is Main Idea (the important part of the story). The amazing words we will discuss include: jungle, nibbling, trembling, beast, snarled, and entangled. The sight words to focus on will be: they, you, and of. During the week we will also examine how to correctly write sentences. Children should know that a sentence is a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter, has spaces between words, and ends with a period.

Phonics:  This week is a continuation of the /o/ sound, spelled with letter Oo. Remember: this is a vowel, it has two sounds! We will be practicing /o/ in the beginning, as well as the middle of words. Phoneme segmentation is also emphasized this week (breaking words into individual sounds- example: /c/, /a/, /t/ ).

Math:

Topic 4 will be completed and tested. This unit compares and orders numbers from 0 through 10. Topic 5 also begins this week. This topic explores the numbers to 20.  The students will be counting, reading, and writing the numbers 11 through 20.

Reminders:

~ Please continue to practice sight words, counting to 100, and writing 0-20.

~ Outdoor recess continues throughout the winter. Please dress your child appropriately for the cold weather.

~ The children will participate in a glow fun run on Friday, January 26th. Pledges are being accepted to raise money for the PTO Boosterthon. Please make sure your child is wearing sneakers and the blue shirt that was provided without cost. (These went home sometime in October). The PTO provides our students with many fun activities throughout the year. Please show your support if possible. Students can gain rewards when goals are met.

Thank you for your continued cooperation!

Week of January 15-19, 2018
Fun times at the  Brainshow Mania on Friday!

Can you believe it is already the middle of the school year? Our 100th day is quickly approaching. We have some activities planned to celebrate this milestone event, which is scheduled for January 30th.

Reading: The title of this week's story is "Then and Now." This non-fictional story emphasizes how things we use today are different from things used long ago. We will practice how to draw conclusions in a story. We will also work on developing meaningful word groups when writing sentences. The amazing words presented will be: gears, webcams, phonographs, headphones, handwritten, and newspapers. The sight words we will focus on are: they, you, and of.
Phonics: The letter of the week is Oo. The children will work with the short /o/ sound, as in hop, as well as the long /o/ sound, as in hope.

Math: Topic 4 will be completed and tested. This unit compares and orders numbers from 0 through 10. Topic 5 will also be introduced this week. This topic explores the numbers to 20

Reminders:

~ Remember to have your child wear a winter coat to school daily. We go outside for recess as often as possible. It is too cold to wear only sweatshirts.

~ Please practice sight words daily. Also go over class work that is sent home. This helps to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the day. Continue to review letter sounds, counting to 100, and writing numbers to 20.

~All tests that are sent home should be signed and RETURNED.

~Friday, January 19th will be a dress down day. Students may wear jeans or sweatpants with a Spartan shirt for a donation of $1.00.

Specials:

Have an outstanding week!

Week of January 8-12, 2018

We are very excited to continue learning in the New Year!

Reading: This week we will enjoy an animal fantasy called “Farfallina and Marcel.” This touching story about a duckling and a caterpillar helps the students understand how some animals change as they grow. The story uses plot identification as the skill to enhance comprehension.

Phonics: Ff  is the letter of the week. The initial and final /f/ sound will be practiced, as in the words fountain and leaf.

Math: Topic 4 will continue this week. This unit compares and orders numbers 0-10. We are still working with the terms greater and less. Students are determining groups that have 1 or 2 more, as well as 1 or 2 fewer. We are also putting random numbers in correct order.

Reminders:

~ Please continue to practice sight words (schedule changes have delayed testing).
~ Also continue to practice letter sounds, segmenting words (this skill will help children learn how to spell when writing), and blending sounds to read words.

~ Math skills to practice include counting to 100 and writing 0-20.
~ The weather has been extremely cold lately. Temperatures are not the same in all parts of the school. Your child may feel more comfortable if they have a sweater they can wear if they get chilly.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and have a fantastic week!

Week of January 2-5, 2018

Welcome back after the long break. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. Sometimes these winter months seem long and the children get bored. However, we still have many exciting events ahead to celebrate and incorporate into learning opportunities. Stay tuned!

Reading: This week’s story is “George Washington Visits.” It is a historical fiction book that compares life today and life hundreds of years ago. The amazing words presented are: celebration, barn, arch, sprinted, blacksmith, and soldier. The sight words we will focus on are: look and see. Cause and effect is the comprehension skill to practice.

Phonics: Two letters are taught throughout the story. Dd and Kk are the feature letters. Since k and c make the same sound, the students will learn to use “k” to spell the /k/ sound when it is followed by e, i, or y; /k/ is spelled with “c” when it is followed by a, o, u.  (ex. key, kite, lucky. Cat, cop, cut)

Math: Topic 4 will continue. This unit compares and orders numbers 0-10. The students will learn the terms greater and less. These lessons require students to determine groups that have 1 or 2 more, as well as 1 or 2 fewer. Students will also put random numbers in correct order. These ideas can be tricky so please review the math sheets with your child.

Reminders:

~ The weather is very cold. The students may become chilly when they wear short sleeves. Sweaters can be kept in cubbies.

~ Tuesday, January 2nd is Day 8 on the rotation schedule.
Have a delightful week!

~ Mrs. Green
