Week of March 25, 2019

Reading: This week’s informational text discusses what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency. The story is called “Mayday! Mayday!” Cause and Effect is the comprehension skill we will continue to develop. The amazing words are: rescue, yacht, mechanic, pilot, sailor, and shimmering. The popular sight words are: yellow, blue, and green. Writing practice will focus on using question marks and uppercase letters appropriately. Sentences that rhyme are also used throughout the week.

Phonics:  The letter of the week is Xx. The final /ks/ sound will be stressed, as in the word box.

Math: Unit 5 (Understanding Subtraction) will be continue this week.

The children are becoming very familiar with separating stories, taking away, using the minus sign, finding differences, and subtraction sentences.

Reminders:

~Spring Pictures will be taken on Tuesday, March 26<sup>th.

~</sup>~The Kindergarten Prom will be held on Saturday, April 13^th. Forms and payments are due by Friday, March 29^th. 

~The March Book Log recording sheets are due on Monday, April 1^st.  The goal is to read at least 15 books!

~Kindergarten Graduation Pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 4^th. Information was sent home last week. All students will be photographed for the class photo. Please remember to have your child wear a white, collared shirt to school that day.

~ Kindergarten Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 28^th @ 1:00PM in the NS High School Auditorium.

~The PTO Basket Raffle will take place on April 27^th and 28^th.  Our class theme is “Cold Drinks”.  Donations are due by April 12^th. Monetary donations will also be accepted. This money will be used to purchase related items to add to our basket. Students who provide donations will receive a free Spartan Dress Down Day on Friday, April 26^th. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We appreciate your cooperation! Many thanks for the donations we have already received!

~ Please continue to practice sight words daily. I am so happy to see the students recognizing these words immediately when they are reading. It is very beneficial to improve their fluency.

March 18-22, 2019

Reading: Unit 5 begins this week. The theme is “How do people and things get from here to there?”The first story is an animal fantasy called “Max Takes the Train.” It will teach realism and fantasy while discussing different types of transportation. The students will have some practice with sentences that ask questions. The amazing words are: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, and sidecar. The sight words are: yellow, blue, and green.

Phonics: All letters and sounds are practiced in words daily. This week’s focus is on two letters: Jj and Ww. We will work with the /j/ sound, as in jaguar; along with the /w/ sound, as in watermelon.

Math: We are continuing to work on subtraction this week. We are using manipulatives to act out separating stories, taking away, comparing groups that have more or fewer, using the minus sign, finding differences, and subtraction sentences.

Reminders:

~ Please remember to practice sight words daily. The goal is to learn 96 words! Many children are getting very close to this goal. Some students are already practicing the 1^st grade list. Thank you for your help!

~Spring pictures are scheduled for March 26^th.

~Kindergarten Graduation pictures will be taken on April 4^th. More information will be sent home in the near future.

Week of March 11-15, 2019

Reading: After completing “If You Could Go to Antarctic,” we will move on to “Abuela.” This fantasy story is about a little girl and her grandmother exploring a big city. Some Spanish words will be introduced. To build comprehension we will be identifying the setting in stories. The amazing words presented are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, and harbor. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is Ee. We will continue learning the initial and medial /e/ sounds in words.

Math: Topic 5 is introduced this week. The theme is “Understanding Subtraction.” We will use stories to separate and take away objects in groups. Math vocabulary includes subtract, minus, equal, and difference.

 Reminders:

~Please return the the “I’m a Reader” forms if your child participated in the newspaper reading suggestions. Don’t forget to sign the paper and initial each day of the week.

~ Friday, March 15 is a Spartan Dress Down Day for a $1 donation.

~The PTO Basket Raffle will be held on April 27^th and 28^th.  Our class will compose a “Cold Drinks” basket.  All donations will be greatly appreciated.

~ Please remember to continue practicing sight words daily. Also practice writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between words, and a punctuation mark at the end.

Week of March 4-March 8, 2019

Reading: Goldilocks continues this week. Then we move on to an informational text called “If You Could Go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill in this story is classifying and categorizing. The amazing words for the week are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss how to write sentences correctly. Capital letters and periods will be stressed further this week.

Phonics: Ee is the letter accompanying these lessons. We will discuss both the long and short sounds for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.

Math: Topic 4’s “Understanding Addition” will be tested this week. This topic teaches joining groups, using the plus sign, finding sums, and writing addition sentences.

Reminders:

~ This week is Newspaper in Education Week. You are encouraged to read the paper with your child for 10-15 minutes each day. (You can pick out letters or sight words, count words in sentences, sound out familiar words, etc.). The “I’m a Reader” forms should be returned next week. Also, check the classified section. Send Mrs. Green’s ad to school with your child and they will receive a Sparty ticket.

~Due to the weather delay last week, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students this Friday, March 8th. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

~ The PTO is holding a Basket Auction on April 27^{h and} 28^th . Our theme is “Cold Drinks.”A letter regarding donations toward our class basket was sent home last week. Please contact me with any questions.

Week of February 25- March 1, 2019

Reading: We are continuing the story “One Little Mouse.” We also plan to start “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” this week. This classic fairy tale will be used to understand characters in a story. Our amazing words for the week are: bears, cottage, porridge, middle-sized, big, and small. The sight words include: one, two, three, four, and five. We are practicing how to write telling sentences. Encourage your child to practice at home. (Sentences begin with a capital letter, end with a period, and have a finger space between words. They also have a naming part and a telling part!)

Phonics: Consonant blends were introduced last week. Since this is a more difficult concept, we will be practicing it often.  Gg will be our next letter. The /g/ sound, as in goose will be the focus. We will practice words with this sound at the beginning, as well as words containing this sound at the end (ex. bag).

Math:   Understanding Addition will be continued this week. We are using number stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will is used to write addition sentences. Please review the vocabulary words add, plus sign, equal sign, and sum while you are practicing addition at home.

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are a lot! Congratulations to those students who are practicing the first grade list already!

~ On Friday, March 1st, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

Week of February 18-22, 2019

Reading:  After completing the lessons for “My Lucky Day,” we will begin to read “One Little Mouse.” This is an animal fantasy discusses adventures that animals can experience. Story sequence will be stressed in these lessons. The amazing words presented are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, and shadows. The targeted sight words are: one, two, three, four, and five. We will also learn what parts are needed in a sentence to make it complete.
Phonics:  Consonant blends will be introduced this week. The students will learn how to blend two sounds together in a word. (ex. /s/ and /l/ together make a /sl/ sound, as in slide.

Math: The students are continuing to learn how to understand addition. We are using stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.

~Don’t forget to log the books you are reading. 15 is the goal for each month!

Thank you for all of the Valentines that were sent to school. The children really enjoyed passing out their messages to their friends. They also appreciated the treats that were sent in for the party. You helped to make our day extra special!

Week of February 11-15, 2019

Reading: “My Lucky Day” is the story for the week. This animal fantasy tells about a fortunate adventure involving a piglet and a fox. We will be exploring cause and effect, as well as action parts in a sentence. The Amazing Words for the week are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy and scrubber. The Sight Words: are, that and so will be rehearsed.

Phonics: The focus letter is Ll. The sound for this letter is /l/, as in lemon. We will explore this sound in the beginning and end of words.

Math: We are working on understanding addition. Please practice joining groups and review the plus and equals signs.

Reminders:

~Our Valentine party will take place on Friday from 2:00-3:00. Please make sure valentines are brought to school on or before that day. 

~Friday is a Spartan Dress Down Day. A donation of $1.00 will allow students to wear jeans or sweatpants with a Spartan shirt.

~Please follow the correct rotation days. When there is a snow day, the rotation days change from the original days printed on the monthly calendar. For example, if Tuesday is scheduled as Day 3 and we have a snow day, the next day we are present will be Day 3.
