March 9-13, 2020

Reading: Unit 5 begins this week. Our theme is “How do people and things get from here to there?” The first story is an animal fantasy called “Max Takes the Train.” It will teach realism and fantasy while discussing different types of transportation. The students will have some practice with sentences that ask questions. The amazing words are: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, and sidecar. The sight words are: yellow, blue, and green.

Phonics: All letters and sounds are practiced in words daily. This week’s focus is on two letters: Jj and Ww. We will work with the /j/ sound, as in jaguar; along with the /w/ sound, as in watermelon.

Math: Topic 4’s “Understanding Addition” will be tested this week. This topic teaches joining groups, using the plus sign, finding sums, and writing addition sentences. Topic 5, “Understanding Subtraction,” will also be introduced this week. We will use stories to separate and take away objects in groups. Math vocabulary includes subtract, minus, equal, and difference.



Reminders:

~Please return the the “I’m a Reader” forms if your child participated in the newspaper reading suggestions. Don’t forget to sign the paper and initial each day of the week.

~The PTO Basket Raffle will be held on April 25^th and 26^th.  Our class will compose a “Cold Drinks” basket.  All donations will be greatly appreciated

~ Please remember to continue practicing sight words daily. Also practice writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between words, and a punctuation mark at the end.

March 2-6, 2020

Reading: Our story this week is called “Abuela.” This is a fantasy about a little girl and her grandmother exploring a big city. Some Spanish words will be introduced. To build comprehension we will be identifying the setting in stories. The amazing words presented are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, and harbor. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also be reading some Dr. Seuss books and participating in activities that accompany the books.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is Ee. We will continue learning the initial and medial /e/ sounds in words.

Math:   Understanding Addition will be continued this week. We are joining 2 smaller groups to make a larger group. We are using manipulatives and acting out stories to help the children understand the concept. Please review the vocabulary words add, plus sign, equal sign, addend, and sum while you are practicing addition at home.

Reminders:

~ This week is Newspaper in Education Week. You are encouraged to read the paper with your child for 10-15 minutes each day. (You can pick out letters or sight words, count words in sentences, sound out familiar words, etc.). The “I’m a Reader” forms should be returned next week. Also, check the classified section. Send Mrs. Green’s ad to school with your child and they will get a reward.

~To celebrate Career Week, Kindergarten students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite hero on Friday, March 6^th.

February 24-28, 2020

Reading: This week’s story is an informational text called “If You Could Go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill in this story is classifying and categorizing. The amazing words for the week are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss how to write sentences correctly. Capital letters and periods will be stressed further this week.

Phonics: Ee is our letter for the week. We will discuss both the long and short sounds for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.

Math:   Understanding Addition will be continued this week. We are using number stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign is used to write addition sentences. Please review the vocabulary words add, plus sign, equal sign, and sum while you are practicing addition at home.

Reminders:

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are a lot! Some students are very close to meeting that goal! Congratulations to the 2 students who have already mastered the Kindergarten words!

~ On Friday, February 28^th, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities. We will be incorporating some fun Dr. Seuss books and activities into our reading lessons throughout the next few weeks.

February 18-22, 2020

Thank you for all the contributions to make our Valentine’s Day Party so enjoyable. The children were so excited to share their Valentines with their friends. We had some snacks, played some games, and had time to appreciate each other. I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend!

Reading: “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” is our story for the week. This classic fairy tale will be used to understand characters in a story. Our amazing words for the week are: bears, cottage, porridge, middle-sized, big, and small. The sight words include: one, two, three, four, and five. We are practicing how to write telling sentences. Please encourage your child to practice at home. (Sentences begin with a capital letter, end with a period, and have a finger space between words. They also have a naming part and a telling part!)

Phonics: Consonant blends were introduced last week. This concept can be difficult to understand, therefore, we will practice it often.  Gg will be our next letter. The /g/ sound, as in goose will be the focus. We will practice words with this sound at the beginning, as well as words containing this sound at the end (ex. bag).

Math:   Understanding Addition will be continued this week. We are using number stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. Addition sentences are written using the plus and equal signs. Please review the vocabulary words add, plus sign, equal sign, and sum while you are practicing addition at home.

100 Days Smarter!

February 10-14, 2020

Reading:  “One Little Mouse” is the title of the story for the week. This animal fantasy discusses adventures that animals can experience. Story sequence will be stressed in these lessons. The amazing words presented are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, and shadows. The targeted sight words are: one, two, three, four, and five. We will also learn what parts are needed in a sentence to make it complete.
Phonics:  Consonant blends will be introduced this week. The students will learn how to blend two consonant sounds together in a word. (ex. /s/ and /l/ together make a /sl/ sound, as in slide.

Math: The students are continuing to learn how to understand addition. The lessons teach the children how to join two small groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be introduced this week.

Reminders:

~Monday is Day 6 (Music) on the Rotation schedule. (Friday was not a rotation day due to the early dismissal).

~Don’t forget to log the books you are reading. 15 is the goal for each month!

~Our Valentine party will take place on Thursday.  Please make sure valentines are brought to school on or before that day. 

~ There is no school for students on Friday, February 14^th. Enjoy that special day with your very own little Valentine!

~School will be closed on Monday, February 17^th for President’s Day... Extra long weekend! 😊

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year on Friday. The children learned some fun facts about the traditions of this holiday. We also had a small feast of our own involving crispy noodles with duck sauce and fortune cookies.

Reading: Unit 4 begins this week. The stories in this unit will discuss adventures. The first story is Eric Carle’s animal fantasy, “Rooster’s Off to See the World.” Our comprehension skill to focus on this week is Sequence (the order of events in a story).  The new amazing words to explore are: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, and homesick. The featured sight words include: are, do, and that.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is Hh. The initial /h/ sound (as in helicopter) will be the focus.

Math: We are continuing to compare and order numbers to 20. Please practice counting backward. Also practice using the words greater & fewer, along with more & less.

Class News:

~ Please remember to send back your child’s report card envelope.

~Our 100^th day is only a few days away! On Thursday, January 30^th we will be completing activities involving the concept of 100. Students are encouraged to dress as if they were 100 years old.

JANUARY 20-24, 2020     

Reading: This week’s story is a classic fable called “The Lion and the Mouse.” We will practice identifying the Main Idea (the important part of the story) in the story. The amazing words for the week include: jungle, nibbling, trembling, beast, snarled, and entangled. The sight words to focus are: they, you, and of. During the week we will also examine how to correctly write sentences. Children should know that a sentence is a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter, has spaces between words, and ends with a period.

Phonics:  This week is a continuation of the /o/ sound, spelled with letter Oo.  We will be practicing the short /o/ in the beginning, as well as the middle of words. We will also touch on some words with the long o sound made with a vowel-consonant-sneaky e pattern (ex. hole, code). Phoneme segmentation is also emphasized this week (breaking words into individual sounds- example: /c/, /a/, /t/ ).

Math: Unit 3 continues this week. This unit compares and orders numbers from 0 through 20. Remember to review concepts such as greater (more) and fewer (less), also practice counting backward  (20, 19, 18, 17…) and putting numbers in correct order.

~ Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 24^th. Please sign the envelope and return as soon as possible.

Reading: The title of this week's story is "Then and Now." This non-fictional story emphasizes how things we use today are different from things used long ago. We will practice how to draw conclusions in a story. We will also work on developing meaningful word groups when writing sentences. The amazing words presented will be: gears, webcams, phonographs, headphones, handwritten, and newspapers. The sight words we will focus on are: they, you, and of.

Phonics: The letter of the week is Oo. The children will work with the short /o/ sound, as in hop, as well as the long /o/ sound, as in hope.

Math: Unit 3 continues this week. This unit compares and orders numbers from 0 through 20. Students are creating groups that have 1 or 2 more, as well as 1 or 2 fewer. We are also putting random numbers in correct order.

Reminders:

~ Friday, January 17^th is a dress down day. Students may provide a $1.00 donation in order to wear a Spartan shirt with jeans or sweatpants.

~ Please continue to practice sight words daily. The children are doing a great job reading these words in stories!

~ Also continue to practice letter sounds, segmenting words (cat- /k/, /a/, /t/), and blending sounds to read words.

January 6-10, 2020  

Welcome back to a regular schedule! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season. It is always nice to take a break and cherish the moments with our families. As we begin our new year, it is amazing to see how much your children have learned since September. I am impressed!

Reading: “Farfallina and Marcel” is the animal fantasy we will enjoy this week.  This is a heart-warming story about a duckling and a caterpillar. It helps the students understand how some animals change as they grow. The story uses plot identification as the skill to enhance comprehension.

Phonics: Ff is the letter of the week. The initial and final /f/ sound will be practiced, as in the words fountain and leaf.

Math: Unit 3 will continue this week. This unit will compare and order numbers 0-20. We are working with the terms greater and fewer.  We will determine a number that is 1 or 2 more than a given number. We will also determine 1 or 2 fewer. The unit also practices putting random numbers into correct order.

Reminders:

~ Please continue to practice sight words daily.

~ Also continue to practice letter sounds, segmenting words (this skill will help children learn how to spell when writing), and blending sounds to read words.

~ Math skills to practice include: counting to 100, reading and writing 0-20, identifying 2D and 3D shapes.

Frozen at the Movie Theater!

December 16-20, 2019

We are truly enjoying “the most wonderful time of the year!”  The students have been working very hard this year. Their progress is tremendous! We have a busy schedule this week filled with many fun, holiday activities. Tuesday we will be visiting the high school to see the band and chorus holiday program.  Thursday is the PBIS Reward day.

We will be using Christmas stories this week to practice our Reading skills. While reading the stories we will discuss characters, setting, plot, and the sequence of the story. We will also search for sight words, compare and contrast stories, and classify and categorize the information in some of the books. Our weekly story is called “George Washington Visits.” This historical fiction helps us determine how life today is different than life hundreds of years ago.

Our Math Topic 2 will end this week. The lessons focus on how to read, write, and count numbers 11-20. Please continue to practice counting to 100, identifying the numbers, building the numbers with objects, and writing the numerals 0-20. 

Reminders:

~ Wednesday is “Ugly Sweater Day’ with a donation of $1.00.

~ Thursday is our monthly PBIS reward. The children are permitted to wear pajamas and board the polar express in our classroom. We will be watching the movie, enjoying hot cocoa and cookies, making a small craft, and coloring scenes from the movie.

~ Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm on Friday, December 2oth. School will resume on Thursday, January 2^nd.

~ While you are looking for something to entertain your child over the break… Please try to practice the sight words and our fundamental skills. (letters and sounds, rhyming, identifying numbers, counting to 100, writing 0-20, etc.) Also take time to have your child practice reading with words they can sound out and blend.

December 9-13, 2019

The holiday spirit is upon us all. The excitement is in the air. We are trying our best to stay focused and meet our goals while participating in some fun holiday activities.

Our Reading story for the week is an animal fantasy called “Little Quack.” We will be practicing how to identify the plot in a story (The important things that happen in a story). This story is about a duckling that learns new things as he gets older. This gives us the opportunity to discuss verbs that are happening now and in the past. The amazing words presented in the story are: duckling, pond, paddle, plunged, proud, and brave. The targeted sight words are: me, with, and she. (As always, remember to practice sight words daily. The children are doing a great job progressing through the lists!)

Our Phonics letter of the week is Rr. The /r/ sound, as in reindeer, will be the focus in our lessons along with segmenting, blending, rhyming, and reading words.

Math: Numbers to 20 will continue this week. We are counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20. Please remember to keep practicing correct number writing. Also practice identifying the missing number. (We are one point away from meeting our Spring Math goal!)

Reminders:

~ Wednesday, December 11^th is a canned good dress down day. If your child brings in a canned good or a monetary donation to be donated to a local food bank, they will be permitted to dress down for the day.

~Our class will be buying at the Holiday Shop on Thursday, December 12th. 

~ Our Field Trip to ride the Santa Train will take place on Friday, December 13^th. Children are encouraged to wear pajamas like the characters in the Polar Express story. (Chaperones are also welcome to dress the role!) Please do not forget to pack your child’s lunch in a disposable bag if you did not choose a school lunch for that day.

~The holiday concert will be held at the High School auditorium on Saturday, December 14th.  Kindergarten is scheduled for 10:00.

I hope everyone enjoyed their family time during the Thanksgiving break. We are now rolling into the most wonderful time of the year! This is the season for great excitement, as well as busy schedules. We will take some time to incorporate Christmas activities into our regular lessons over the next few weeks.  

Reading is moving on to Unit 3 this week! This unit discusses changes that occur around us. “Little Panda” is our first story. It is a nonfictional story that explains how a panda changes in its first year of life. The children will compare and contrast how a panda and her mother are alike, as well as how they are different. Verbs will be introduced this week. Our amazing words are: weigh, measure, healthy, bamboo, curious, and explore. New sight words presented this week include: me, with, and she.

Phonics: Two letters will be targeted this week: Bb and Nn. The initial and final /b/ and /n/ sounds will be practiced.

Math lessons will continue to work with the numbers 11-20. Our goal is to read, write, and count numbers up to 20. Please practice counting forward and backward from 0-20.

~Tuesday, December 3^rd is Day 1 on the rotation schedule.

~ Please remember to return the letter to Santa that was sent home on Wednesday. We will deliver them straight to Santa when we attend our field trip.

~ The PTO is conducting the Holiday Gift Workshop next week. Our class buying day will be Thursday, December 12^th.

~The Kindergarten field trip is Friday, December 13th.  Watch for information that will be sent home in your child’s folder.

~Mark your calendars…The Christmas Concert is scheduled for Saturday, December 14^th at the high school auditorium. Kindergarten will hit the stage at 10:00am. Please have your child arrive by 9:30 in order to prepare.

November 18-22, 2019

Reading: “Jack and the Beanstalk” is the modern fairy tale that we will be reading this week. This fun story helps us further understand the difference between realism and fantasy. We will also point out realism and fantasy in some Thanksgiving stories this week.

Phonics: We are practicing beginning, middle, and final sounds in words. (For example: the word cat has 3 sounds: /k/, /a/, /t/. Please review all letters and their corresponding sounds with your child to see where they might be having difficulty.

Math: Numbers 11-20 are still the focus of our lessons. We are learning how to read, write, count, and represent these numbers. Another skill we are practicing is counting forward and backward on a number line. Please take some time to review this skill at home, along with counting to 100.

Reminders:

~We try to get outside for recess as often as possible. Please be sure to have your child wear a heavy coat to school. Also practice having your child put their coat on and zip or button it closed.

November 11-15, 2019

Our Reading story is called “A Bed for the Winter.” This educational text will continue to discuss hibernation. We will learn that animals create different types of homes in order to stay warm during the coldest season of the year. Sequence of a story will be revisited this week. Adjectives for opposites are presented this week. The amazing words are: nest, meadow, stump, tree trunk, hive, and den. Two new sight words will be taught this week: he and for. 

The Phonics letter of the week is Ii. The focus will be on the short /i/ sound, as in igloo. Words with the initial and medial /i/ sound will be practiced. We are working hard on segmenting word sounds and blending sounds to read words. Knowing all the letter sounds really helps build success with these skills.

Our Math lessons for the week will focus on numbers 11-20. We are practicing how to count, read, write, and represent numbers from 0-20.  We are enjoying the teen songs to help us remember these numbers! Please continue to practice counting to 100 and writing numbers 0-20 with correct formation.

Halloween provided a full week of excitement in our classroom. Thank you for all of the donations we received to help us celebrate the holiday. We are now moving into the Thanksgiving spirit. These special events help fuel our positive mood to make us more productive learners!

Reading: Our story for the week is an animal fantasy called “Bear Snores On.” Realism and fantasy will be discussed. Simple rhyme and repeated sentences will give students the opportunity to join in the reading process. We will look for adjectives that describe the size, number, color, and shape of nouns. The amazing words we will explore include: sleep, winter, cave, woods, storm, and blustery. The sight words to focus on are: like, my, and we.

Phonics: Cc is the letter of the week. The initial and final /k/ sound will be practiced. (Example: cat, rock)

Math: Our unit of numbers 0-10 will wrap up this week. We will be moving right on with numbers to 20. Please continue to practice counting and writing those numbers at home. We will also continue to work on missing numbers in Spring Math. Counting forward and backward seems to be helping with this challenging skill.

Reminders:

*Students are no longer permitted to wear shorts to school. Shorts will return in the Spring.

*The colder weather does not stop us from outdoor recess. Please make sure your child is wearing a warm coat. Also, please practice having your child put on their coat independently. This includes pulling out inside out sleeves, zipping, and buttoning.

* There will be no school for students on Monday, November 11^th.

*Please continue to practice sight words as well as the following skills: letters & sounds, syllables, rhyming, counting to 100, and writing numbers & letters correctly. We have been  blending letter sounds to read words. You can notice your child’s progress when you listen to them read simple texts that are sent home.
