Week of March 27-31, 2017

Reading: We will be starting a new unit this week. The theme is “How do people and things get from here to there?”The first story is an animal fantasy called “Max Takes the Train.” It will teach realism and fantasy while discussing different types of transportation. The students will have some practice with sentences that ask questions. The amazing words are: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, and sidecar. The sight words are: yellow, blue, and green.

Phonics: All letters and sounds are practiced in words daily. The two we will focus on this week are: Jj and Ww. We will work with the /j/ sound, as in jaguar; along with the /w/ sound, as in watermelon.

Math: Topic 9 will begin this week. The students will be Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10. We will learn different ways to make numbers 4 through 10. Number sentences will also be written for these groups. (ex. 3+1=4, 2+2=4)

Reminders:

~Please remember to practice all sight words daily. We are getting so much closer to the 96 word goal!

~Spring picture money should be sent to school as soon as possible. The picture package should be returned if you do not plan on making the purchase.

~Friday, May 31^st will be a dress down day for autism awareness. Students may bring $1.00 to wear a blue shirt along with jeans or sweatpants.

~The PTO basket auction is scheduled for April 8^th and 9^th. Our class is composing a “Road Trip” basket for the event. Please send your themed items or monetary donations to school as soon as possible. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We appreciate your cooperation!

Week of March 13-17, 2017

Reading: “Abuela” is the story we will be reading this week. This fantasy story is about a little girl and her grandmother exploring a big city. To build comprehension we will be identifying the setting in stories. The amazing words presented in the story are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, and harbor. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss using the pronouns I and me in sentences. Rhythm and rhyme will be taught in poems.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is  Ee. We will continue learning the initial and medial /e/ sounds in words.

Math: We will close up Topic 8 this week (Understanding Subtraction).

The test will be on separating stories, taking away, comparing groups that have more or fewer, using the minus sign, finding differences, and subtraction sentences.

~ The PTO Chinese Auction is scheduled for April 8^th and 9^th. Our class is composing a road trip basket for the event. Please send donations to school as early as possible. We appreciate your cooperation.

~ Friday, March 17^th is a Spartan dress down day. Students may pay $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt with jeans or sweat pants.

Week of March 7-11, 2016

Last week was very busy. We were celebrating Read Across America week with Dr. Seuss stories. Phonics and Language Arts activities were incorporated into these lessons. Therefore, we will not move on to another reading story yet.

Reading: We will continue the informational text called “If You Could go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill we will practice while reading is Classify and Categorize. The amazing words are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also continue working on writing sentences correctly with capital letters and periods.

Phonics: The letter of the week is Ee. We will discuss both the long and short sound for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.

Math: Topic 8 is introduced this week. The theme is “Understanding Subtraction.” We will use stories to separate, take away, and compare groups. The minus sign will also be presented.

Reminders:

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are the goal!

~ This week is Newspaper in Education Week. You are encouraged to read the paper with your child for 10-15 minutes each day. (You can pick out letters or sight words, count words in sentences, sound out familiar words, etc.). The “I’m a Reader” forms should be returned next week.

~ The PTO is holding a Chinese Auction on April 8^th and 9^th. The theme for our class basket is Road Trip. We are asking for donations to create a prize. Any item relating to a car ride could be placed in this category. (Papers were sent home for suggestions. Please contact me if you need any further clarification). If you prefer, monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase these items. Thank you for your support!

~ Wednesday, March 8^th is a data delay.

~ Spring pictures will be taken on Thursday, March 9^th. Please complete and send back the forms that were sent home. All students will be photographed. You will have the option to purchase the package once they arrive.

Reading: We will complete “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” this week.  The next story is an informational text called “If You Could Go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill in this story is classifying and categorizing. We will also discuss how to write sentences correctly. Capital letters and periods will be stressed further this week.

Math: Topic 7’s “Understanding Addition” will finish up this week. This topic teaches joining groups, using the plus sign, finding sums, and writing addition sentences. Topic 8 “Understanding Subtraction” will also begin.  The lessons include separating groups, taking away, using the minus sign, finding differences, and writing subtraction sentences.

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are a lot!

~ On Friday, March 3^rd, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

~ The PTO is holding a Chinese Auction on April 8^th and 9^th. Check your child’s folder for a letter regarding our basket theme.

Week of February 13-17, 2017

The weather has been causing some changes in our plans. However, we were still able to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday. The students enjoyed the fun time with their friends and the special messages they received from each other. Thank you for the sweet Valentines!

Reading:  We will complete “My Lucky Day” this week. Cause and effect is still the focus skill.  The next story we will start is “One Little Mouse.” This is an animal fantasy that answers the question “What adventures can animals have?” Story sequence will be stressed in these lessons. The amazing words presented are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, and shadows. The targeted sight words are: one, two, three, four, and five. We will also learn what parts are needed in a sentence to make it complete.

Phonics:  Consonant blends will be introduced this week. The students will learn how to blend two sounds together in a word. (ex. /s/ and /l/ together make a /sl/ sound, as in slide.

Math:  Topic 7 (Understanding Addition) will be introduced. We will use stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.

Reminders:

~Thursday is a dress down day. Students may donate $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt along with jeans or sweatpants.

~Friday (2/17/17) is an Act 80 Day for teachers. Students do not have school.

~Monday (2/20/17) is President’s Day. School will be closed.

~ Please continue to practice sight words daily. We are striving to attain and possibly surpass that goal of 96 words!

~Continue practicing counting to 100 and writing numbers 0-20.

Week of February 6-10, 2017

Reading: “My Lucky Day” is our new story. This animal fantasy tells about a fortunate adventure involving a piglet and a fox. We will be exploring cause and effect, as well as action parts in a sentence. The Amazing Words for the week are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy and scrubber. The Sight Words: are, that and so will be rehearsed.

Phonics: The focus letter is Ll. The sound for this letter is /l/, as in lemon. We will explore this sound in the beginning and end of words.

Math: Topic 6 (Numbers on a hundred chart) will be tested this week.  Topic 7 will also be introduced. The goal of this topic is to understand addition. We will use stories showing how to join groups and count how many items there are altogether. The plus and equal sign will be used to write addition sentences.

Reminders:

~ Please review sight words daily. Also practice counting by 1’s, 2’s, and 10’s. Students are expected to count to 100!

~Don’t forget to log the books you are reading. 15 is the goal for each month.

~Wednesday, 2/8/17 will be a data delay.

~Friday 2/10/17 is our Valentine party. Please have cards sent in on time.

~Group activity photos will be taken on 2/10/17. Please return your form if you have not done so.

Week of January 30-February 3, 2017

February is a month filled with fun. Last week we began our celebrations with Chinese New Year. Gung Hay Fat Choy! Our upcoming events include: the 100^th day of school, Groundhog Day, Superbowl, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Mardi Gras. This will be a busy month!

Reading: We will start Unit 4 this week. The stories in this section will discuss adventures. The first story is Eric Carle’s animal fantasy, “Rooster’s Off to See the World.” Sequence (the order of events in a story) will be the skill taught.  The new amazing words to explore are: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, and homesick. The sight words to focus on are: are, do, and that.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is Hh. The initial /h/ sound (as in helicopter) will be the focus.

Math: We are still working on Numbers to 100 this week. We are counting and writing numbers, counting groups of 10, looking for patterns on a hundred chart, and estimating about how many. Please also practice these skills at home.

Class News:

~Our 100^th day is only a few days away! On Wednesday, February 1^st we will be completing activities involving the concept of 100. Students are encouraged to dress as if they were 100 years old.

~Thursday, February 2^nd is Groundhog Day.  Remember to check Phil’s weather predictions!

~ The Kindergarten class will be having a Luau for the January behavior reward on Friday, February 3^rd.  (Students who have less than 3 red or yellow days in their calendar are included). Students are permitted to wear a tropical printed shirt or dress with dress code bottoms.  No sandals or flip flops.

~Our Valentine Party will be held on Friday, February 10^th. This is when valentine cards will be passed out. Please be sure to have your child bring their cards to school by that on time.
