Week of March 26-30, 2018



Reading: This week’s story is an informational text that discusses what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency. The story is called “Mayday! Mayday!Cause and Effect is the comprehension skill we will continue to develop. The amazing words are: rescue, yacht, mechanic, pilot, sailor, and shimmering. The popular sight words are: yellow, blue, and green. Writing practice will focus on using question marks and uppercase letters appropriately. Sentences that rhyme are also used throughout the week.


Phonics:  The letter of the week is Xx. The final /ks/ sound will be stressed, as in the word box.



Math: Topic 8 (Understanding Subtraction) will be completed this week.

The test will be on separating stories, taking away, comparing groups that have more or fewer, using the minus sign, finding differences, and subtraction sentences.



Reminders:

~The PBIS monthly reward will take place on Thursday, March 29th. This will be a non-rotation day. (Special classes will not take place)

~School will be closed on Friday, March 30th.

~Spring pictures are rescheduled for Tuesday, April 3rd.

~The PTO Basket Raffle will be held on April 14th-15th. Our class theme is “Cold Drinks.” Please send in donations as soon as possible so we can begin composing our basket. Thank you to those who have already contributed.

~Keep practicing those sight words… I am seeing wonderful progress! Thank you for your help.

Week of March 19-23, 2017
Lucky Leprechauns!
Reading: A new unit begins this week. The theme is “How do people and things get from here to there?”The first story is an animal fantasy called “Max Takes the Train.” It will teach realism and fantasy while discussing different types of transportation. The students will have some practice with sentences that ask questions. The amazing words are: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, and sidecar. The sight words are: yellow, blue, and green.

Phonics: All letters and sounds are practiced in words daily. This week’s focus is on two letters: Jj and Ww. We will work with the /j/ sound, as in jaguar; along with the /w/ sound, as in watermelon.



Math: Topic 8 ends  this week (Understanding Subtraction).

Reminders:

~ Please remember to practice sight words daily. The goal is to learn 96 words! Many children are getting very close to this goal. Some students are already practicing the 1st grade list, along with a few students who are on to 2rd grade words. Thank you for your help!

~ The PTO Chinese Auction is scheduled for April 14th and 15th. Our class is composing a cold drink basket for the event. Please send donations to school as early as possible. We appreciate your cooperation.

Week of March 12-16, 2018


Reading: “Abuela” is the story we will be reading this week. This fantasy story is about a little girl and her grandmother exploring a big city. The Spanish language will be introduced throughout the story. To build comprehension we will be identifying the setting in stories. The amazing words presented are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, and harbor. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss using the pronouns I and me in sentences. Rhythm and rhyme will be taught in poems.

Phonics:  Our letter of the week is  Ee. We will continue learning the initial and medial /e/ sounds in words.

Math: Topic 8 is introduced this week. The theme is “Understanding Subtraction.” We will use stories to separate, take away, and compare groups. The minus sign will also be presented.

Reminders:
~Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday. Please sign and return only the envelope. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
~ The PTO is holding a Basket Auction on April 8th and 9th. “Cold Drinks” is our basket theme.  We are asking for donations to create a prize. Any item related to enjoying a cold drink may be placed in this category. (Papers were sent home for suggestions. Please contact me if you need any further clarification). If you prefer, monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase these items. Each student who brings a donation to school will be able to dress down for free on April 6th. Thank you for your support!
~ Please remember to continue practicing sight words daily. Also practice writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between words, and a punctuation mark at the end.

Week of March 5-9, 2018

Reading: The next story is an informational text called “If You Could Go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill in this story is classifying and categorizing. The amazing words for the week are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words stressed this week are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss how to write sentences correctly. Capital letters and periods will be stressed further this week.

Phonics: Ee is the letter accompanying these lessons. We will discuss both the long and short sound for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.



 Math: Topic 7’s “Understanding Addition” will finish up this week. This topic teaches joining groups, using the plus sign, finding sums, and writing addition sentences. Topic 8 “Understanding Subtraction” will also begin.  The lessons include separating groups, taking away, using the minus sign, finding differences, and writing subtraction sentences.

Reminders:

~ This week is Newspaper in Education Week. You are encouraged to read the paper with your child for 10-15 minutes each day. (You can pick out letters or sight words, count words in sentences, sound out familiar words, etc.). The “I’m a Reader” forms should be returned next week. Also, check the classified section. Send Mrs. Green’s ad to school with your child and they will receive a prize.

~ On Friday, March 9th, the children will celebrate “Read Across America” with Bloomsburg University students. These guests will read Dr. Seuss stories and provide some fun, educational activities.

~Friday is a dress down day. Students may donate $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt along with jeans or sweatpants. It will also be our PBIS reward day.

 ~ Spring pictures will be taken on Friday, March 9th. Please complete and send back the forms that were sent home. All students will be photographed. You will have the option to purchase the package once they arrive.

 ~ The PTO is holding a Basket Auction on April 14h and 15th . Our theme is “Cold Drinks.” Check your child’s folder for a letter regarding donations toward our class basket.
