Week of March 27-31, 2017


Reading: We will be starting a new unit this week. The theme is “How do people and things get from here to there?”The first story is an animal fantasy called “Max Takes the Train.” It will teach realism and fantasy while discussing different types of transportation. The students will have some practice with sentences that ask questions. The amazing words are: plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat, and sidecar. The sight words are: yellow, blue, and green.

Phonics: All letters and sounds are practiced in words daily. The two we will focus on this week are: Jj and Ww. We will work with the /j/ sound, as in jaguar; along with the /w/ sound, as in watermelon.



Math: Topic 9 will begin this week. The students will be Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10. We will learn different ways to make numbers 4 through 10. Number sentences will also be written for these groups. (ex. 3+1=4, 2+2=4)



Reminders:

~Please remember to practice all sight words daily. We are getting so much closer to the 96 word goal!

~Spring picture money should be sent to school as soon as possible. The picture package should be returned if you do not plan on making the purchase.

~Friday, May 31st will be a dress down day for autism awareness. Students may bring $1.00 to wear a blue shirt along with jeans or sweatpants.

~The PTO basket auction is scheduled for April 8th and 9th. Our class is composing a “Road Trip” basket for the event. Please send your themed items or monetary donations to school as soon as possible. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We appreciate your cooperation!

Week of March 13-17, 2017

Reading: “Abuela” is the story we will be reading this week. This fantasy story is about a little girl and her grandmother exploring a big city. To build comprehension we will be identifying the setting in stories. The amazing words presented in the story are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, and harbor. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also discuss using the pronouns and me in sentences. Rhythm and rhyme will be taught in poems.
Phonics:  Our letter of the week is  Ee. We will continue learning the initial and medial /e/ sounds in words.

Math: We will close up Topic 8 this week (Understanding Subtraction).
The test will be on separating stories, taking away, comparing groups that have more or fewer, using the minus sign, finding differences, and subtraction sentences.

~ Please remember to continue practicing sight words daily.
~ The PTO Chinese Auction is scheduled for April 8th and 9th. Our class is composing a road trip basket for the event. Please send donations to school as early as possible. We appreciate your cooperation.
~ Friday, March 17th is a Spartan dress down day. Students may pay $1.00 to wear a Spartan shirt with jeans or sweat pants.

Week of March 7-11, 2016


Last week was very busy. We were celebrating Read Across America week with Dr. Seuss stories. Phonics and Language Arts activities were incorporated into these lessons. Therefore, we will not move on to another reading story yet.



Reading: We will continue the informational text called “If You Could go to Antarctica.” The comprehension skill we will practice while reading is Classify and Categorize. The amazing words are: Antarctica, continent, icebergs, penguins, seals, and whales. The sight words to focus on are: here, go, and from. We will also continue working on writing sentences correctly with capital letters and periods.

Phonics: The letter of the week is Ee. We will discuss both the long and short sound for this vowel. However, the focus is on the short /e/ sound, as in egg. The sound will be taught in the beginning and middle of words.



Math: Topic 8 is introduced this week. The theme is “Understanding Subtraction.” We will use stories to separate, take away, and compare groups. The minus sign will also be presented.



Reminders:

~ As always, please continue to practice sight words daily. 96 words are the goal!

~ This week is Newspaper in Education Week. You are encouraged to read the paper with your child for 10-15 minutes each day. (You can pick out letters or sight words, count words in sentences, sound out familiar words, etc.). The “I’m a Reader” forms should be returned next week.

~ The PTO is holding a Chinese Auction on April 8th and 9th. The theme for our class basket is Road Trip. We are asking for donations to create a prize. Any item relating to a car ride could be placed in this category. (Papers were sent home for suggestions. Please contact me if you need any further clarification). If you prefer, monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase these items. Thank you for your support!

~ Wednesday, March 8th is a data delay.

~ Spring pictures will be taken on Thursday, March 9th. Please complete and send back the forms that were sent home. All students will be photographed. You will have the option to purchase the package once they arrive.
